The First Sunday after Christmas

Matthew 2:13-23

The first thing that the baby Jesus experienced was the wonder of the angels announcing to the shepherds who then made their way to the manger and saw him. Then the visit of the wise men from the east who came and paid homage to baby Jesus.

We now hear that there is a total change of scene. The child is now facing threat to his life. Joseph now takes Mary and baby Jesus and they flee to Egypt. They travel 40 miles for the safety of the child. In the meantime Herod orders the massacre of all children aged two and this is seen as the fulfilment of the prophecy of Jeremiah {Jer. 31.15}.

Later they return from Egypt to Israel but then knowing that it is not safe for the child, Joseph and Mary now journey back to Nazareth a small town in the region of Galilee.

It is remarkable to see the commitment of Joseph and Mary to safeguard the child from danger. This is a new experience for them. Their life is now centered around this child. They leave their family, friends and work and undergo this displacement and flee a refugees to a distant land where they make their home.

Like the baby Jesus, every child is so vulnerable and there is always danger for children. In the modern time we hear different types of dangers children face in their day today life. So many factors and forces seem to challenge the growth and sometimes the lives of children.

Joseph and Mary now appear before us as the role models of parental responsibility towards children. It is a responsibility of not only parents and grandparents but all adults. The welfare and the wellbeing of every child is of great importance in the eyes of God. Jesus tells us that  ‘If any of you put a stumbling-block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea.’. So important are the little children for God.

We as a community re affirm our responsibility towards every child in our midst and help them to grow to the full potential that God has created them with. We protect every child from all sorts of harm or danger and provide a safe and a wonderful world for them.
