About St Edward’s Garden of Remembrance.
The garden provides an invaluable service to the community of a local place where the ashes of loved ones can be interred. The garden is open 24 hours a day on everyday of the year and is well used by a constant stream of visitors who come to place flowers, or spend some quiet time remembering loved ones in the green and peaceful space. Many of those visiting the garden are quite elderly, so having a local place to come and remember loved ones is vitally important, as they would find a journey into Croydon or to Greenlawns Cemetery very difficult on a regular basis.
The garden is maintained solely by volunteers, who do an excellent job in keeping the grass cut, weeding the beds and keeping the hedges trimmed, removing dead floral tributes and keeping the garden looking neat and tidy.
IN LINE WITH THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND REGULATIONS FOR GRAVEYARDS AND GARDENS OF REMEMBRANCE: ONLY FRESH OR SILK FLOWERS ARE ALLOWED IN THE GARDEN, NO PLASTIC FLOWERS, ADDITIONAL POTS, PLAQUES OR HANGING TRIBUTES ARE PERMITTED IN THE GARDEN AND WILL BE REMOVED TO THE END OF THE GARDEN FOR COLLECTION FOR 14 DAYS AND THEN THEY WILL BE DISPOSED OF.
There is a one-off fee for the burial of ashes and the placement of any approved memorial vase or plaque. Once the memorial is installed by our sextant it is there for perpetuity, unlike many memorial gardens that charge a renewal fee after a certain number of years. The fees collected go towards the upkeep of the garden, and for any improvements/maintenance works that are required.
We hope that the garden is a place of peace, of stillness and of beauty. A fitting place to remember loved ones.
